Core tenet of Rastafari

Babylon must be resisted.

The systems of oppression — colonial, commercial, mental — are named Babylon, and livity is lived against them.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Babylon names the whole apparatus of oppression — colonialism, the police, the banks, the church that blessed slavery, the media — and resistance to it is a religious obligation rather than a political program. The counterpart is Zion: Ethiopia, Africa, home. Repatriation was originally meant literally, and some thousands did move to Shashamane in Ethiopia on land granted by Selassie; for many Rastafari today it is understood as spiritual as much as geographic.
