It publishes country-by-country figures of officers, soldiers, adherents and corps in its annual Year Book rather than a single global membership headline; totals commonly cited run above a million and a half and are not independently audited. The number of people it serves through its social programmes is far larger and is a different thing entirely.

the ethic — what it asks of a life
The Soldier's Covenant — signed, and it includes not drinking. A soldier signs a document promising abstinence from alcohol, tobacco and non-medical drugs, and from gambling and pornography, and undertaking to wear the uniform and support the corps.
