Membership is free and online, which is why the Temple's claim of more than 700,000 members should be read as sign-ups rather than congregants. Ordained ministry is by application. The Internal Revenue Service classified the Temple as a church on 25 April 2019, after the organisation had spent years refusing exemption on principle.
