The shared center — held across the tradition
The Dao bore one, one bore two, two bore three.
And three bore the ten thousand things. It is not a creation story — nobody decides anything and nothing is made from outside. It is a description of how differentiation happens, and the ten thousand things means everything without needing to list it.

The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao.
The source and current of all things escapes every definition — the first line of the Tao Te Ching is a warning about all the lines that follow.

Everything is qi.
Breath, vapour, energy, matter — one substance in different states of condensation. Rock is dense qi and thought is thin qi, and there is no second kind of stuff and no line between physical and spiritual. This is why Chinese medicine, meditation, martial arts and liturgy are one continuous field rather than four.

Act without forcing — wu wei.
Water defeats stone without striking it. The sage accomplishes by moving with the grain of things, not against it.

The body is a country.
It has provinces, an administration, officials in every organ, a capital in the head and fields of cinnabar where things are cultivated. Taoist meditation is largely a matter of visiting these places and knowing the names of who lives there — the same gods as in the temple, at domestic scale.

Opposites arise together and turn into each other.
Yin and yang: dark and light, soft and hard — not enemies but partners in one rotation.

De — what accumulates when you stop grabbing.
Usually translated virtue, which imports a moral tone the word does not have. It is nearer to potency or standing: the effectiveness a thing has by being fully what it is. The Daodejing's point is that it grows in the person who is not accumulating it.

Ziran — self-so.
Things do what they do without being told. Water goes down, a child grows, a seed opens. The word is now the ordinary Chinese for nature, and its original sense is closer to of its own accord — which is the whole argument for not interfering.

Held by most — broad, but not universal
Simplicity is strength.
The uncarved block: return to what you were before ambition. Empires fall; valleys endure.

Return is how the Dao moves.
Everything at its extreme turns into its opposite; full moons wane and the strong break. The practical instruction is to stay off the extremes, and the Daodejing repeatedly recommends being the valley, the female, the low ground and the uncarved block for exactly this reason.

The gods hold offices.
They have ranks, jurisdictions, terms and paperwork, and they can be promoted, demoted, transferred or impeached. A priest addresses them by written memorial in the correct format, sealed. Chinese religion did not imagine heaven as a court by accident — it imagined it as the same court it lived under.

Heaven, earth and the human correspond.
The same five phases, the same seasons, the same cycles run through the cosmos, the state and the body, so what happens in one can be read in the others. A drought is a governance problem, a fever is a seasonal one, and the calendar is a medical document.

Contested within — affirmed by some schools, refused by others
Immortality is a physical project.
Not the soul surviving — the body refined until it does not die. Outer alchemy tried it with cinnabar and mercury and killed several emperors; inner alchemy relocated the same furnace, ingredients and process inside the practitioner. The vocabulary of neidan is chemistry, used deliberately.
