Lighting the chalice.

The flame lit in a shared cup to open worship — the one ritual nearly every creedless congregation keeps.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held

The flaming chalice was designed in 1941 by Hans Deutsch for the Unitarian Service Committee, which was smuggling refugees out of Nazi-occupied Europe — it began as a mark on documents that had to look official. It is now lit at the start of nearly every UU service, often by a child, and it is the movement's one near-universal ritual, which is a striking origin for a symbol of a creedless faith.
