Core tenet of Anabaptism

Church and state must part.

The voluntary congregation owes Caesar taxes, not worship — a heresy in 1525, a constitution now.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The Schleitheim Confession of 1527 separated church and state a full 250 years before the American constitution: Anabaptists refused oaths, refused public office, and refused to bear the sword, holding that the church is a voluntary community distinct from the world. That was politically intolerable to every European authority, which is why the movement was hunted, and why its survivors ended up in Pennsylvania, Ukraine, Paraguay, and Canada.
