The three-legged stool — remove one and the seat tips.
The three-legged stool — scripture, tradition, and reason — is Richard Hooker's formulation and is Anglicanism's characteristic method: scripture is primary, tradition informs its reading, and reason adjudicates. Its virtue is capaciousness, and its cost is that Anglicanism contains Anglo-Catholics and evangelicals who disagree profoundly, held together by shared worship rather than shared doctrine. The current strain over sexuality has tested whether that can hold.
