The Maramon Convention.
Every February the Pamba river dries back and a pavilion goes up on the sand at Maramon for a week of preaching and Bible study, with attendance in the tens of thousands each day. It has run since 1895 and is described as the largest Christian convention in Asia. Nobody is baptised, married or ordained there; people come to listen.
The Maramon Convention has been held annually since 1895, in the dry season when the Pamba retreats and exposes a sandbank large enough for a temporary pavilion. Sessions run for a week, morning and evening, with invited preachers from India and abroad, and the convention is broadcast and streamed. Its origins are in the evangelical revival that followed the reform, and it is organised by the Mar Thoma Evangelistic Association. Attendance figures are contested but the scale is not: it is the defining institution of Mar Thoma religious life and the reason a small church has an outsized presence in Indian Christianity.
