No communion until the congregation is at peace.
Before the bread there is a members meeting, and anything unresolved between members is meant to come out in it. In conservative conferences the deacon visits every household beforehand and asks. A congregation that cannot get clear postpones the table rather than take it divided.
The preparatory members meeting, called Vorbereitung in the German-speaking conferences, is the practical form of Matthew 5:23-24, and it is the Anabaptist mechanism that most surprises visitors: the congregation is expected to name its conflicts out loud before it eats. In Old Order and conservative conferences the deacon or minister visits each household and asks directly whether the member is at peace with God, with the brotherhood and with the Ordnung. If a serious matter is unresolved, communion is postponed for the whole congregation, not merely withheld from one person. Progressive congregations have largely reduced this to a general invitation, and the loss of it is one of the standing complaints conservatives make about them.
