The Moravian Church (Unitas Fratrum)

Denomination·Founded 1457 CE·The worldwide Unity is organised into provinces, mission provinces and mission areas rather than a single membership roll, and does not publish one consolidated figure. The Tanzanian provinces together account for roughly 800,000 members and are by a wide margin the largest part of the church; the historic European and North American provinces are small and shrinking.

In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things love. The motto is older than the Moravians and they made it a constitution: the church has deliberately never adopted a detailed confession, holding that a short list of essentials leaves room for a long fellowship. The Saviour's wounds, addressed directly — and the church's own embarrassment about it. Zinzendorf's theology put the pierced side of Christ at the centre of devotion, and in the Sifting Time of the 1740s the imagery ran into hymns about crawling into the side-hole and calling oneself a little blood-worm.
