Core tenet of Presbyterianism

God's sovereignty orders all things.

The Calvinist inheritance held firm — election, providence, and the comfort both give.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Presbyterian theology is Reformed theology, so divine sovereignty runs through everything: providence orders all events, election is unconditional, and the Confession states these without softening. The pastoral use has always been comfort rather than fatalism — nothing that happens is outside God's ordering — and the philosophical objection has always been the same one Calvinism faces everywhere about human freedom and divine responsibility for evil.
