Core tenet of Presbyterianism

The Westminster standards confess the faith.

The 1646 Confession and its catechisms: Reformed doctrine written down for the long haul.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The Westminster Confession of 1646, with its Larger and Shorter Catechisms, is the most thorough Reformed confessional statement in English, and Presbyterian ministers subscribe to it, though the strictness of subscription is a live and old argument. Its opening question — what is the chief end of man? — with the answer "to glorify God and enjoy him forever" is among the most quoted sentences in Protestant Christianity.
