The sangat and the Khalsa.

The congregation is open to everyone; the Khalsa — initiated by amrit — takes the five Ks and the shared names Singh and Kaur.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Sikh community life has two layers. The sangat is the congregation — anyone who gathers, of any background, and the gurdwara's four doors traditionally signify openness on all sides. The Khalsa is the initiated order within it, bound by the Five Ks and a code of conduct. Authority sits with the community rather than a clergy: there are no priests, the granthi who reads the scripture is a functionary, and collective decisions are made in assembly before the Guru Granth Sahib.
