Immersion.
Down into the water and up again — the baptistery built into the church wall is Baptist architecture's one monument.
Immersion is performed in a baptistry behind the pulpit, in a river, or in the sea, and it is public by design — the congregation witnesses a person's profession. The symbolism is explicit: going down into the water is burial with Christ, coming up is resurrection. In many Baptist churches it is the emotional high point of congregational life and is often accompanied by testimony from the person being baptized.
