Word and sacrament.
Preaching and the Supper in one service — Christ truly present in, with, and under the bread and wine.
Word and sacrament together define Lutheran worship: the liturgy is retained in structure close to the medieval Mass, purged of what Luther considered unscriptural, with preaching given equal weight to communion. Lutheranism kept far more ceremony than the Reformed traditions did, on the principle that whatever scripture does not forbid may be retained if it serves — which is the opposite of the regulative principle Calvinists adopted.
