Core tenet of Calvinism (the Reformed tradition)

Scripture is the final rule.

Sola scriptura carried to system: doctrine, worship, and church order all argued from the text.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Reformed churches apply the regulative principle: worship may include only what scripture positively warrants, as against the Lutheran and Anglican view that whatever is not forbidden may be retained. This is why historic Reformed worship stripped out images, instruments, and set feasts, and why Puritan churches were plain. The principle is also why Reformed traditions produced such detailed confessional documents — Westminster, Heidelberg, Belgic — since the standard had to be written down.
