The gospel belongs east of Rome.
India by tradition with Thomas; Chang'an by 635 — the stele still stands. Christianity's eastern half is not a footnote.
This church spread east rather than west and went further than any other before modern times: Persia, India, Central Asia, and China, where the Xi'an stele of 781 records its presence at the Tang court. At its height it may have had more territory than the Latin and Greek churches combined. It was devastated by Timur in the fourteenth century, and its heirs — the Assyrian Church of the East — were reduced further by the 1915 genocide and by the wars in Iraq since 2003.
