Mahavira — the ford-maker.

Not a founder but the 24th in a line of teachers who found the crossing: he showed the ford over the river of rebirth, then crossed it himself.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Mahavira is called the twenty-fourth Tirthankara, not the founder — the tradition insists the path is beginningless and he rediscovered it. The word means ford-maker: one who finds the crossing over the river of rebirth and marks it for others. He was a contemporary of the Buddha in the same region, and the two traditions' texts mention each other's communities, which makes them one of the ancient world's best-documented cases of parallel religious innovation.
