The Tridentine Mass.
Latin, incense, the priest facing east with the people — the 1570 missal celebrated as if the intervening centuries were a rumor.
The Tridentine Mass is largely silent — the canon is said inaudibly — and much of it is in Latin, with the congregation following in a hand missal or praying privately. Its defenders describe the silence and the eastward orientation as directing attention toward God rather than toward the assembly; its critics regard the same features as excluding the people from the liturgy. Papal permission for it has been granted, expanded, and restricted repeatedly since 1984.
