Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Paul never met Jesus in life, wrote earlier than any Gospel, and shaped Christianity more than any figure besides its founder — which is why "did Paul distort Jesus?" has been a live question since the Enlightenment. He is also the source of the tradition's most-quoted defenses of equality (neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female) and of its most-quoted subordinations, sometimes pages apart, and scholars dispute which letters are genuinely his. Every Christian reform movement has gone back to him: Augustine, Luther, Barth.

From the sources — the passages this rests on; concise renderings, cited

It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.

Galatians 2:20
