Hanuman is arguably the most-worshipped deity in everyday India, with more roadside shrines than any other figure, and the reason is his position rather than his power: he is a devotee, not a lord, and worshipping him is worshipping devotion itself. Tuesday and Saturday are his days; wrestlers, laborers, and students claim him. The Hanuman Chalisa, a forty-verse hymn from the sixteenth century, is probably the single most recited Hindu text on earth.
